Coming Soon:
Mark Donnelly's Solo Show
August 17-30
"Jungle Fever"
at LJAA Gallery
Mark Donnelly has an affinity for all things jungle-like. Mark's artwork is a reflection of his intense interest in the tropics and encouraging awareness of its incredible beauty and its critical ecological role.
Mark has developed a unique technique that allows him to create virtual three dimensional still life models and digitally "paint" from them. Since each "painting" exists only within his computer, he uses giclee to create a final piece of art suitable for framing.
You won't want to miss his Solo Show opening August 17 and runs through Sunday, August 30.
The reception is scheduled for Sunday, August 23, from 6pm-8pm.
Save the Date: August 8
See the Show: "Visual Variations"
Where:
LJAA Gallery
8100 Paseo del Ocasa, Suite B La Jolla, CA 92037 |
|
Dana Levine, Caroline Morse, Gwen Nobil, Jeff Brosbe, and John Valois present their "Visual Variations" group show, which runs from August 3 to 16.
The title of the exhibition refers to each artist's unique vision, ranging from the abstract to the realistic, from black and white to intense color, and from high impact to quiet contemplation. No matter what the stylistic differences, all the images in the show leave a lasting impression on the viewer.
Please join the artists at their reception on August 8 from 4pm to 7pm. Refreshments are provided.
The gallery will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm or by appointment.

| August 22: "Share Your Art" Demo |
|
|
This is a must-see event! Our fellow LJAA member Chovy is giving a free demo on portrait painting.
Chovy recently moved to San Diego from Chicago and began a career as a full time artist. Her modern impressionist style showcases bold colors and exuberant brush strokes, which combine to capture the energy and unique spirit of each subject rendered.
Though she did not receive a formal art degree, she attended college at Brown University and during that time had the opportunity to take several courses at Rhode Island School of Design.
Chovy continues her studies today with renowned local impressionist artist Sebastian Capella and portrait artist Perietta Hestor. Chovy is a member of the La Jolla Art Association, San Diego Art Institute, and The San Diego Portrait Society. The study of portrait painting and drawing has been the foundation of Chovy's artistic growth and development. It is her belief that the artist can master anything if she or he can master the challenge of a creating a great portrait." |

You Have Seen Our New Look!
Now it is time to put it to your best use!
The La Jolla Art Association is now using this new email system called "Constant Contact." We have the ability to send this newsletter or announcements about your show or press releases. Constant Contact is a software program designed to help the members stay informed and to send attractive advertisements to the members, the public, and the press.
We have the email list for members, a list for other artists in the the San Diego area, a collectors list(visitors to the gallery) and the press email lists. As we improve so will our lists and emails.
How can a member utilize this new service? If you are having a show, you send the information plus a few jpeg photos to emails@lajollaart.org. Jeff Brosbe (brosbe@cox.net) has volunteered to help put together your email announcements. After designing the email, he will send you a test (sample of the email). At that point, you can edit it and when you are happy with the email, Jeff will schedule it to be sent to the lists of your choice. You will have an opportunity to forward that email to your private list, too.
This is a new benefit of being a member of the La Jolla Art Assoication. Jane Cooper used it for her solo show recently. She sold two paintings at her reception last Saturday. If you have questions about the service and how to utlilize it you can email Jeff.

President's Corner
Summer greetings to you all. Hopefully, you are enjoying our warm weather right now and getting outside to find inspiration for new works of art.
As we near 5 full months in our new location, I am happy to report that new artist members are joining us every month, and the gallery is almost completely rented out for the year. The past few months, our fourth Saturday morning "Share Your Art" events have been well attended, and gallery sales are beginning to pick up.
You have our hard working, talented executive board and some dedicated members to thank for making all of this happen. If you want to see first hand all of our changes and activities take a trip to our homepage on the internet www.lajollaart.org.
Although we have some good news, we also must be realistic about our future as an organization. Unfortunately, although we are a non-profit organization, we do need capital to continue operating the gallery and continue to allow members to rent our space at about half of what we needed to stay in business.
The original idea was that artists' sales would help make up the difference but in today's economy, that is not a reality. Now, with the assistance of two fundraising campaigns planned, the organization can be solvent but we need your help to help make that happen.
Our first fundraising campaign is the LJAA calendar. We all need participate by selling calendars to our families, friends and neighbors. The second campaign will be a capital campaign in November, when we request donations and/or bequeaths directly from our business neighbors and the greater La Jolla community.
We hope everyone will plan on spending some time helping during these campaigns to ensure that your La Jolla Art Association will thrive.
Warm Regards, Kris deYoung, President president@lajollaart.org858-268-8642 |

"Art in the Heart of La Jolla": Join this Community Outreach Program
Pierce Harrah (Vice President of LJAA) and Jade Schulz (active La Jolla Town Council Trustee and now LJAA member) have worked diligently to involve LJAA artists and the La Jolla Town Council in a community outreach program. They are providing art by LJAA artists in the heart of La Jolla.
What does this involve? LJAA artists will be painting prepared 20"x 27"' boards that will be fastened to the trash receptacles in La Jolla Village. The purpose is to help beautify La Jolla Village and to promote our LJAA artists' paintings.
Twelve LJAA artists are painting their artwork at home and delivering their completed works to Jade by August 6. The same artists will participate in "Easel Day" on August 8 to promote the community project. In a live demo, the artists will paint the same subjects that they completed at home, so that viewers can watch the project.
Jade will attach the actual artwork on the boards to the trash receptacles. Each board will include the artist's name, as well as being stenciled with "La Jolla Art Association."
We will receive a lot of publicity for this event: The artwork will remain for 6 to 9 months, depending on wear and tear.
Thanks to those participating! Questions can be directed to Pierce Harrah by phone 858-642-0098 or email him at harrah@nethere.com. |

LJAA "Share Your Art" Program Gaining Momentum
Catherine Grawin's painting demo on Saturday, July 25, was a great success. In fact, many members want a repeat performance. They have requested a hands on workshop. Even experienced painters at the class learned new techniques from this oil painting demonstration.
LJAA Educational Director Catherine MacDonald started the "Share Your Art Program" to provide an introduction to art workshops for our membership. The workshops are scheduled for the last Saturday of the month from 10:30am to noon. The first demo was presented by Rodger Heglar on working with oil pastels. In June, Kris deYoung (LJAA's President), gave a workshop on how to market your self as an artist, which generated quite a lively discussion. LJAA members have also requested a repeat performance of this workshop. Kris said she would put it on again in the fall.
On August 22, Chovy will present a demonstration on portrait painting (see the article in the left panel.) On September 26, you will have an opportunity to learn calligraphy, when Sharon Ford (LJAA Treasurer) presents her "Beginning Calligraphy Workshop."
Watch for more informative emails and notices about the "Share Your Art Program". If you would like to present a demonstration or request a special class or workshop, please contact Catherine MacDonald at classes@lajollaart.org. |
