PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Greetings LJAA Members and Friends,
Welcome to tax season. Your treasurer, Theresa Early Newbern, has been busy getting end of the year records in order, while your Membership Director Fujiko Isomura has been busy with all the hard work of taking in your membership fees and updating the website data base with all the information you send her. This is also the time when I remind you that any money or travel time you spend in our volunteer time for our non-profit art organization can be a tax write-off. Save receipts and keep travel records.
Since I brought up the subject of money, I wanted to share some very interesting information with you. Theresa has discovered that some members had sold between $2,000 and $3,000 in artwork from our gallery in 2010. Another thing we discovered is that those artists were also the most active in renting a wall for a month or in participating in group or solo shows. And this was all during "tough economic times"! I think the lesson here is that there are patrons out there who will buy your work, but your work needs to be seen for more than just a few days out of the year.
This year will also bring many changes to our board. If you would like to influence the direction that LJAA is going, I welcome you to apply for a board position. Our By-Laws and Rules of Association will only allow an individual to serve on the board for 6 years maximum and only 3 years in a single position. We will need to find a replacement for me, your President, and your Vice President, Pierce Harrah. Both Pierce and I have reached our maximum allowed time on the board. Fujiko Isomura will have to step down from her Membership Director position, which she has now done for 3 years. We also need a Secretary and there is always a need for help with Exhibitions, Gallery Operations and Advertising. I think that Catherine MacDonald, who has been very efficiently organizing our "Share Your Art" events and other art class opportunities, might need to be looking for a replacement this year.
As a member, you can share your skills to promote a vital historical organization, make some friends, learn a little more about your art and yourself and make a difference in the life of the greater San Diego art community. Best regards,
Kris deYoung LJAA President president@lajollaart.org

(image right: "Alien Figure," acrylic on canvas by John Rouse) At our January board meeting we were joined by supporting members Roberta Henson and Barbara McVey. Thank you very much for being a part of our monthly board meeting. Our monthly board meeting is open to all and every member. Please do join us when you are available!
Our February board meeting will be at the LJAA Gallery on Monday, January 14 starting at 6:30pm. (New membership applicants' presentations start at 6pm.)

("Couple and Reclining Man," photography by Marc McVey)
The Pie and Tea Social at UTC Coco's was held on Sunday afternoon, January 23. It was a very cozy and fun gathering, with various kinds of pies served and friendly passionate conversations. We met newer members, caught up with each other, discussed new ideas about coming events and workshops, and renewed memberships. Our 2011 membership renewal has been going well. Many of us have already renewed and our online gallery staffing calendar dates have been filling up nicely. The renewal deadline is February 28. Please send a renewal check and the gallery staffing date form directly to the membership director, following the instructions you received in the mail in early January (if you did not receive a letter for membership renewal, please contact me).
I am looking for a new Membership Director who can start this coming June. If anybody is interested in this position please contact me. With new membership rules now in place, I am expecting the tasks of the Membership Director become much simpler than before!
Warm Wishes,
Fujiko Isomura LJAA Membership Director membership@lajollaart.org

FROM THE LJAA HISTORIAN
In the very early days of LJAA, one of the original members was A.R. Valentien who was a notable oil painter of California wildflowers. He and his wife first visited California in 1903, stayed in the town of Dulzura and painted wildflowers. They fell in love with San Diego County and the abundance of wildflowers. After returning home to Ohio, they sold their home and returned to San Diego in 1908. A. R. Valentien was commissioned by E. B. Scripps to paint 1100 pieces. During the following years his wife supported them during the financially difficult years by teaching a myriad of arts and craft classes. Mrs. Valentien... To Be Continued

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Marcos Armitaje's work "Sinerre" (image right) has been selected as one of 35 semi-finalists in the UltraStar Cinemas Juried Theatre Artwall Permanent Exhibit. The theme of the juried competition was to "reflect Carmel Valley's coastal colors, textures, spirit and charm with new, original work." While many of the 71 entries focused on the famous Torrey Pines, Mr. Armitaje presented a novel work named Sinerre-an actual digital photograph of infrared light passing through a crystal stone harvested from the coastal bluffs in Del Mar. The warm earth tones captured by Armitaje in his 44" x 33" work echo the tans, browns, blues and reds which typify the miles of renowned coastal bluffs which line the Carmel Valley and La Jolla coastlines. "Because our coastal bluffs are sensitive areas and are categorized as endangered environments, it is incumbent upon us to protect and preserve the unique beauty of these rare bluffs for the generations that will follow us," said Armitaje.

Jeffrey R. Brosbe has had two images accepted into the 36th Annual Small Image Show at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park's Spanish Village. The show runs from January 28 to February 21 from 11am to 4pm.

SHARE YOUR ART: BARBARA McVEY
LJAA's February 26 "Share Your Art" features artist Barbara McVey. She tells her story below. The "Share Your Art" program is open to public for free and held at the LJAA Gallery on the fourth Saturdays of the month from 10:30am to noon. For details, please contact Catherine MacDonald, an Art Classes Coordinator, at classes@lajollaart.org.

My Art Journey
In the late 1960s, I started a very exciting journey into the discovery of who I am as an artist. Like all great journeys, this one has never ended. My explorations have shaped me as an artist. I have been driven to understand color and how to let color create structure, rather than the other way around. I discovered that patterns and forms were endless. I expressed emotions through the dance of colors as I moved them over the canvas and they revealed a story of color and movement as images and shapes appeared.
My paintings are oil on canvas and the paint is mostly applied by hand rather than by traditional methods such as brushes and palette knives. This method allow me to keep a physical connection to the colors, the canvas and the creation that is coming from my heart to the canvas. Each painting I do is an invitation to the viewer to participate in an introspective journey into the world of imagination.
