The LJAA Lecture Series Presents:

The Artist's Guide to Digital Imaging

by Jim Respess
February 15, 2006
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
The Village Gallery
7932 Ivanhoe Avenue

As time goes by, the artist needs to interact more and more with a computer or with someone with a computer. In this presentation, many examples of those interactions will be discussed and demystified. Included in the discussion will be: how to take digital (and non-digital) photos of your artwork; how to prepare images for the web; how to prepare images for submission to shows; how to get giclee'ss prepared. There will also be a short introduction into making art using digital methods.

Jim Respess is an artist, a Photoshop Guru and is the owner of Green Flash Photography, a business dedicated to the production of fine art photography and fine art reproduction (giclee) for artists and photographers.

As part of its outreach program, the LJAA sponsors a lecture each month on subjects of interest to all types of artists. These lectures are free and open to the public at the LJAA Village Gallery in La Jolla.

All lectures are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, and run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Village Gallery is located at 7932 Ivanhoe Avenue, La Jolla, just South of Prospect Street. Digital artist Jim Respess will speak on the process of creating and submitting artwork in digital formats. Watch this newsletter or our website for more details.

LJAA 2005 Outreach Programs

The La Jolla Art Association engages in a variety of community service and outreach programs annually. Highlights of our events for 2005 included:

26th Annual All County Awards Show, coordinated by Luanna Schwartz, in January. In February, San Diego Unified School District High School students displayed their work at LJAA. Shandel Gamer coordinated the show including the matting and hanging of the art. In April, Grossmont High School students were showcased in La Jolla, in an exhibit organized by Eileen Mandell. In March, the Colored Pencil Society held their International Awards show at our Prospect Street gallery. In March and again in October, the North County Photo Arts group exhibited their work at LJAA. Carrie Barton coordinated with the organization to produce these two exhibitions. Escondido Photo Arts showcased their members in November.

In July, LJAA members displayed their work in the La Jolla Riford Library. Caroline Morse coordinated this exhibit. Also in July, LJAA sponsored a juried Digital Art Show, coordinated by Jim Respess. Our venture into the Balboa Park area with an exhibit of member's work at Spanish Village, Gallery 21, was coordinated by Eileen Mandell. Another new venue for LJAA was an exhibit at the Art Institute of California. Kate McCavitt headed that event.

Another annual Outreach of LJAA is the San Diego County Fair awards for Children's Art. Barbara McCroskey has headed this program for us for several years. Also at the Fair, LJAA provided demonstrators. An ongoing monthly outreach is the Lecture Series. LJAA sponsors lectures free to the community on topics of interest to artists. In 2005, there were 10 lectures in the series. Shandel Gamer and Scott Graham coordinated the presenters. As the Library venue became unavailable, Scott also coordinated finding alternate locations and getting our gallery set up to accommodate the lecture series.

Each of these people deserves acknowledgement for the extra effort they gave in support of LJAA outreach activities in 2005. Thanks to the members who rallied to support each event to make them successful!

Thank you all for your contributions to LJAA's Outreach to the San Diego community in 2005!
