FROM THE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
In May we have welcomed a new pastel artist member, Marian Liang (http://www.mariancanvas.com). From her biography, "born with an artistic mind and a love for people, birds and nature," Mrs. Liang was inspired by Cezanne and Matisse's mastery of color, and the richness that it brought forth out of ordinary scenes. Mrs. Liang received a BA in French from Tam Kang University in Taiwan prior to moving to the United States in 1979. She received her MA in arts in 1998 from SUNY at Stony Brook on Long Island, NY. She spent 20 years on the East Coast living in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Florida, and has lived in San Diego since 1999.

Our Annual All Membership Meeting was held at the Riford Library at La Jolla Village on Saturday, May 15 from 10am to noon. Attending members shared such delights as morning coffee, fruits, breads, cheese, and smoked salmon prepared by our Social Director, Salli Sachse. Our new board members were voted in and new plans and ongoing business were presented. Great suggestions and ideas were shared by the attending members. Two of this year's new members also participated. Members had a chance to socialize and reconnect with each other before and after the meeting. If you were not able to come to the annual meeting and you are one of the members who has not been down to the LJAA Gallery this year and meet your fellow artist members, our fundraising event "Night of the Iguana" a cocktail party and a silent auction along with the tropical themed juried show on the night of the July 17 will be a superb opportunity! Please put it on your calender. Please join us at our next monthly board meeting on Monday, June 14 from 6:30pm. Unfortunately, I will be out of town and have to miss it but I am hoping that many of you will join our June Board Meeting! (Members participating meetings earn one Volunteer Hour (VH) for each hour, as well.) Best wishes, Fujiko Isomura LJAA Membership Director membership@lajollaart.org

FROM THE LJAA HISTORIAN
Excerpt from the Art Association Report for the Library, June 6, 1950: "This report of June 6, 1950, brings to close one of the happiest thirty two years of the La Jolla Art Association. It is interesting to know that this art gallery has given more artists a chance to develop year by year and become better known than any other gallery in Southern California. Due to its unique set up allowing amateurs and accomplished artists to compete and exhibit together three times a year, as they develop they are given a chance for a one man show, which helps them to develop further. With forty eight members and a gain of ten or more new members coming in each year. We are having to divide up the time for one man shows to two week periods, and the artists are very appreciative and thankful for that time allowed. By next year we will have to cut down perhaps to a one week showing; except for our most outstanding artists, as increasing interest is shown in more local artists and their worthwhile achievements. Welcome to over eight thousand tourists and local visitors to the gallery each year is extended. I would like to present our President Mrs. Eleanor B. Parkes who is giving in behalf of the Art Association $150.00 Dollars for the book fund of the La Jolla Library."
Best wishes, Harold Dozier LJAA Historian historian@lajollaart.org

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR'S REPORTFujiko Isomura welcomed the new members. We have 108 members this year, down from last year's 136. Reasons for this can be attributed to the economy, distance from the association, wanting to try out new venues, or just "not their style." TRAVELING FOR HIS ART: JEFFREY R. BROSBE

Jeffrey R. Brosbe uses his itchy feet to make his art. For as long as he can remember, Jeff has been in love with seeing new places, meeting new people, and encountering different cultures. Many of his images have been, and continue to be, created during his travels.

Like all travelers, he has had some personal achievements, a myriad of great experiences, and a few disturbing ones. He has been tear-gassed in three countries (U.S., Malaysia, and the Philippines) and seen all three enshrined dictators (Ho, Mao, and Vladimir).
On his recent trip to Thailand, Jeff missed being in the midst of flying hand grenades by less than 2 hours but got some great images of what has almost become a civil war, as well as a few from the celebration of the Thai New Year (Songkran). |

UPCOMING EVENTS & SHOW OPPORTUNITIES
ART IN THE HEART OF LA JOLLA Great news! Following on the success of last year's "Art in the Heart of La Jolla," where 10 of our artists' images were installed on trash containers around the Village, we have been invited by the La Jolla Town Council to participate again this summer. This year they would like at least 15 of our artists' images in 15 additional locations. Here are the details and dates: Thursday, July 8: Deliver paint boards will be delivered to the LJAA Gallery. Saturday, July 31, 11am-2pm: Install paint boards and hold plein air paint demo. Jade Schultz will again supply the fine quality board for acrylic painting, which has held up well this past year, and the plexiglas covering for your acrylic painting. (Sorry, oil painting does not hold up for this project.) To reserve your spot or ask questions, please contact Pierce Harrah, who is organizing this event (858-642-0098 or harrah@nethere.com). Don't wait too long to decide... This will be your opportunity to have one of your signed images permanently installed in the "Heart of La Jolla." There is no cost to you, except your time to paint your board and be present to do a small plein air image on installation day.
................................................................................................
NOW TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR THE JUNE MEMBER'S EXHIBIT IN THE LJAA GALLERY
As the weather warms, more visitors come into our gallery. We have had a steady stream of visitors and at least 75 in attendence at the last reception. In the past two weeks, we have had four original paintings by three of our four artists sold to patrons. To get in on the action and fun and exhibit your work on a wall in the gallery, you can contact Kris deYoung to find out what is available. We will be hanging work for the June Members' Exhibit on June 6 and showing through July 4, when the "Night of the Iguana" show goes up. If you are feeling budget-conscious, you can select to share a large wall with others for the month for a smaller fee. This will be the last Members' Wall Rental event for this year, so those of you who have postponed doing this, might want to grab your chance now. A few walls are already reserved. To figure where your artwork will hang in the gallery or to work details of sharing a wall with a few other artists, contact Kris deYoung (858-268-8642 or president@lajollaart.org)
