Shooting Stars
by
Bill Metz
They are like shooting stars, these thoughts. Some come out of the corner of my eye, introducing themselves and saying good bye all in the same breath. They do not stay long enough to gain any memory of even a single feature. Their only gift was the hello, the knowing that they were there, the joy and excitement, the comfort and gratitude that comes with their presence.
Others move slower, or grab my attention more deeply. Their features become apparent. And after the introduction, they stay even a moment longer. These thoughts become friends very quickly. And like any good friend, we trust them, we hear them, we take interest in them. They share their story with us. How blessed are we? And like any good story told from a loving parent, we fall asleep with what it has left us. We do not even know they have left us as a child does not know it's parent has left the room. And this introduction, story and departure may only last as long as it takes a shooting star to reach the horizon, but it's impression is indelible for a life time.
It is these thoughts I love to write down. Maybe to immortalize them, but they have been long before me. Maybe because I wonder if others have "seen" them too. Mostly though so I won't forget. Though it is useless information I wish to remember, I still write them down. Useless for what is really important ..... happiness, because happiness does not require any information. I am still moved to write them down. I love these thoughts, these shooting stars, these stories that lead me to freedom.
Who I Am When I'm Not an Artist?
Sharon Ford Announcing:
Art in the Heart of The Financial District of Rancho Bernardo
Sharon Ford, along with two other financial advisors from the Rancho Bernardo office of UBS Financial Services, presented an artist reception featuring six local artists. It was held on Wednesday, October 28 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. The featured local artists included Peggy Irvin, Theresa Newbern,
(her painting of the Red Hibiscus above), Gayla Edwards, Darlene Katz, Catherine MacDonald, and Ellen Cramer.
Sharon has been a financial advisor for nearly 30 years and this is the first time she felt she has been able to combine her passion for art with her other life as a financial advisor.
"It feels like we are truly giving back to the community by presenting this introduction to a select group of local artists and it's fun," according to Sharon. The idea was Virginia Kuwahara's, also a financial advisor of many years with the Rancho Bernardo UBS office.
Sharon was promoting the LJAA calendar to her co-workers in the office recently, which earned her the title "the resident artist." One thing led to another and they were soon planning "Art in the Heart of Rancho Bernardo."
The Rancho Bernardo Library holds a free chamber music concert every 4th Wednesday. This is one way for the Friends of the Library to give back to the community.
Sharon and Virginia thought, what could be better but to provide the visual arts of local artists along with the concert offered by the library? They planned the event the same night.
Juleane Spittler, the third financial advisor, joined forces with Sharon and Virginia to help plan the event.
As a thank-you gift to all the attendees of the reception, Sharon, Virgina and Juleane offered a free Financial Plan. It's a program the three financial advisors hope to repeat at least once a quarter.

Repeat Request for Marketing Yourself as an Artist Presentation
A few months ago, our LJAA Present Kris deYoung shared her knowledge and experience with marketing her artwork.
Her presentation was such a success that she gave us a repeat on Saturday, October 24 at the La Jolla Art Association Gallery.
Again, this "Share Your Art" monthly event was well attended and was time well spent for all.
You, too, can share your art and share your expertise on one of these Saturdays, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month.

President's Corner
Greetings fellow artists and creatives.
Halloween is here and, before you know it, Thanksgiving, the December holidays, and the new year.
One of your amazing LJAA member benefits is access to a gallery for the display of your artwork. This is an opportunity that few other art organizations offer their members. To take full advantage of your membership benefit, go to our homepage, www.lajollaart.org, and sign up for your 2010 art show. You can go solo or join with other members to share the space and expenses with them. The earlier you sign up, the better your chances of getting the dates you want.
Since we cannot cover all of our operational expenses by renting out our gallery, we are all selling LJAA 2010 calendars. If you have not yet purchased or sold your share of 10 calendars, there is still time to beat the end of November deadline. Not being a born saleswoman myself, I am amazed at how easy it is to sell them. Of course, they make really beautiful cost-conscious gifts, as well.
Our final fundraising project this year will be a beautiful new LJAA brochure that will be distributed or mailed to targeted people, organizations or locations in San Diego.
Thanks for your support!

Volunteer of the Month
Roberta Henson's art is gracing the walls of the La Jolla Art Association Gallery this month.
She writes, "It's great to be selected as volunteer of the month and have the privilege to hang two of my Art Pieces in the "powder room."
"Actually, volunteering to earn this was good too! I worked several Thursdays at the gallery, talking to visitors, disinfecting, mopping, and cleaning with my husband, Harold. It helped to volunteer Harold for several other duties to hold up the other end for me! There's Two for the Price of One!"

Who I Am When I'm Not an Artist?
Bill Metz
When I am not designing furniture I am designing places to put furniture!
The project shown below is my star project. I love working with natural materials and simple contemporary forms. This project was conceived 15 years ago. It took 5 years to get approval from the city planning. The original owners held it another 5 years before selling it to the women that developed it. I like to say it took 10 years for the right person to find it!

The entry and stairs are around a 30 foot tall atrium which allow light into the upper and lower levels. The offsetting corners work in all three dimensions. The windows and fireplace mimic the open corners. Even the swimming pool copies this as there are three levels of water creating the appearance of cubes of water growing out of one another.
Architecture is also a love of mine and I am pleased to be able to do this for a living. I also write poetry, hike, and love the outdoors.
(See Bill's "Shooting Stars" to the left.) |

The Julian Arts Guild will host its annual Open Studios Tour November 21 and November 22 from10am to 5pm. Maps cost $10 and will be available at the Julian Town Hall and many other locations in the area, including Wynola Pizza, Wynola Antiques, The Julian Art Gallery, and Yesteryears. Painting alla Prima in Oils: The La Jolla Athenaeum has asked Catherine Grawin to teach a continuing Intermediate class this Winter Session starting January 2010. The class will be held on Thursdays from 9am to 12pm and will also be beginner-friendly.
Painting en Plein Air: UCSD Extension has asked Catherine to return in Spring 2010 to teach Plein air painting. The Summer 2009 class was a success and met in locations like Torrey Pines Reserve, La Jolla Cove and San Elijo Lagoon.
Painting alla Prima Classes, Solana Beach Studio, Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 1pm: Painting alla Prima is an exciting "wet-on-wet" oil painting technique that is rapid and painterly. Loose, colorful and impressionistic brushwork defines this very popular style. Come to Catherine's studio with an open mind and relaxed attitude to transcend some old ideas and habits about representational painting. The instructor will supply the subject matter and demonstrate step-by-step while students follow along to create finished alla prima paintings from start to finish.
San Diego Art Institute's "Gathering": Every few months the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) becomes a gathering place for its members as well as nonmembers. Quoting the SDAI website: "This is a great opportunity to meet other members, show your work and see the work being created in the San Diego area." The Gathering takes place on Sundays starting at 4pm. Participants may present up to three pieces for critique. The next meeting is on November 1. For more information, check out the SDAI website. |

Members in the News
Sherry Krulle-Beaton was accepted into two local juried shows. Sherry's painting "Mistonbleu" is exhibited at the Ramona Hotel Gallery through November 7. "Wooded Dreams" and "Last Light" are being shown at the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center in Chula Vista until November 14.
Judy Bengson donated a silk piece of art for the silent auction at the fundraiser for abused kids at the Polinsky Childrens Center in San Diego. The event was called "Chefs and Champions." Former Mayor Susan Golding attended; both she and former 10News Anchor Carol LeBeau were speakers at the fundraiser. It is a great event that she has been participating in for 4 years. Judy is also involved as a volunteer. Child abuse is the third leading cause of death in children under 3 years old, sad but true. The money raised at the event will go for emergency housing, foster care, and education. It does not stop there; money is also raised to further education (such as college and technical schooling), once a person is out of the foster care system.
Tony Cuban was invited to display his art at the St. Clair Gallery's 2nd Annual Holiday Invitational. For show details, see the news article "LJAA Members in St. Clair Holiday Invitational."
Madeline Logan-Davis has exhibitions at two galleries. Featured image "No Class Today" is on display as part of the Art of Nature exhibit with Escondido Arts Partnership Municipal Gallery photo exhibit Inner Space. The second show includes eight of Madeline's images as part of the "Summer Diary" exhibit with the Wellness Center in Vista. You are all invited to attend the open house on Saturday, October 24 from 6pm to 9pm. The Wellness Center is located on 115 Main Street, in Vista. There will be food, fun and music for everyone. If you are walking downtown Main Street you will notice the main street kiosk has a large poster for the Summer Diary exhibit, designed by Madeline.
Mark Donnelly is in negotiations to become one of 15 artists in rotation at the Thom Adro Gallery in Haleiwa, Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu. In addition, Mr. Adro has offered to represent Mark's work at more than a dozen galleries scattered throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Once this contract has been signed, Mark will be shipping 10 pieces to Oahu. For those who have tried to market digital works, you know that it is tougher than selling traditional paintings. Hopefully the experiment will pay off.
Shandel Gamer will be exhibiting three paintings and a giclee print.
Catherine Grawin has been an exhibiting artist at Santa Ysabel Gallery for nearly 10 years. Exciting News: The curator has asked Grawin to prepare new works for her first one-person show in March/April 2010.
Rodger Heglar showed seven paintings in the street-level windows at the Emerald Plaza, at the corner of C and Columbia Streets in downtown San Diego. He also showed one of his oil palette knife series at the Riford Library in La Jolla. These exhibits are through the Allied Artists Association of San Diego during the month of October. In mid-October, Rodger demonstrated his unique oil pastel technique to the Escondido Art Association. And in November, he will judge members' artwork for that organization.
Fujiko Isomura is having three works in "A Complex Weave: Women and Identity in Contemporary Art" exhibition at Steadman Gallery, Rutgers University, Camden, NJ. The show runs to December 18. This is a national tour exhibition co-curated by Dr. Martin Rosenberg, Chair, Dept. of Fine Arts and Prof. of Art History Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and Dr. Susan Isaacs, Prof. of Art History and Curator at Towson University, and Adjunct Curator at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. The national tour is planned until December 2012 and is managed by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions & Museum Services.
Jerome Lipetzky had three paintings juried into Julian and the San Diego Back Country: A Centennial Exhibition of the California Art Club at the Julian Art Gallery. The exhibit runs from November 7 through November 29, with the reception on November 7 from 6pm to 8pm.
Catherine MacDonald had four paintings selected for the Jazzercize Corporation Summer/Fall "Eclectic" Art Exhibition. Her work will be on view at its International Headquarters in Carlsbad through December.
Catherine MacDonald will be showing work at the invitation of UBS Financial Services, Inc. (17140 Bernardo Center Dr. Suite 350). The artist reception is on Wednesday, October 28, from 4:30pm-6:30pm.
Caroline Morse won an Honorable Mention at the San Diego Institute's Regional Show for her photograph, "Fez Tannery Workers." (The same work also won an Honorable Mention at the San Diego Fair.)
Julianne Ricksecker was invited to participate in St. Clair Gallery's 2nd Holiday Invitational. For show details, see the news article "LJAA Members in St. Clair Holiday Invitational." Julianne's work is also being shown in the Mini Print Internacional de Cadques, where it was displayed until September 15 at Taller Galleria Fort, Cadaques, Girona, Spain. The exhibition will travel to Gallery "L'Etangd'Art"; Bages, France, from November 8, 2009 through January 10, 2010.
