 Emerging Artists Show

This year's new LJAA members are showcasing their work now through October 11.

Please welcome them at the artists reception on Sunday, October 11 from 2:30pm to 4pm

For more information, please see the LJAA website.

Calligraphy Workshop an Overwhelming Success!

On Saturday morning, September 26, like any fourth Saturday at the LJAA gallery, a "Share Your Art  Program" took place, but this time it was unusual.

LJAA 2009 Annual Membership Meeting - Rodger Presenting

Both rooms in the La Jolla Art Association gallery were crowded with tables and the 23 students who signed up for Sharon Ford's Beginning Calligraphy Class.

Calligraphy Workshop - Students Learning

All of the students practiced calligraphy by using the felt-tip calligraphy pens provided at the tables. "Practice is the key," Sharon told the students as they practiced the correct angle of the pen while making the the shape of "italic" lettering.

Sharon felt confident that the students left with an understanding of some of the basics of creating beautiful writing, "calligraphy."

The community and LJAA owes thanks to Catherine MacDonald, our Educational Director, for persisting with the organization of the Share Your Art Program.

Each class gets better and better.

A followup Calligraphy class will certainly be in the works.
Please send your requests for a repeat of this workshop to
classes@lajollaart.org
or contact Sharon Ford at

Who Are You When You Aren't an Artist?

This is the first in our new monthly series, "Who Are You When You Aren't an Artist."

We all have our "other lives," which are unique and of interest to our fellow artists. Below are several.

Richard Warner
"My Life as a Wife"

Self-Portrait by Richard Warner

The years after age 21 and up to age 58 were busy. I taught high school fine arts for the first 7 years, then I founded and ran a graphic design business for the next 28.

The business's clients included Chevrolet, Wells Fargo Bank, the San Diego Zoo, and many other local, regional, and national accounts.

Then at age 58 I walked
through a door to the next phase of my journey. My wife was now the breadwinner, and I became her wife.

I now know how to make rice pilaf, bouef bourguignonne, and crepes. I know what a stain stick is, and when to use it.

I have my favorite cashiers at Vons, and the dry cleaning lady knows my name. I still struggle with determining what clothes should avoid the dryer, but I've figured out how to hold those items aside.

I know when to go to Vons, when to Trader Joes, and when to Costco. I pay all the bills at home (Yuck!), and balance the check book (Double yuck!)

And I know my role as the doting wife when the breadwinner comes home. Heck, I'm even learning to be a semi-skilled listener. Although if you ask her, I'm still very much a rookie.

That's all I've got time for now, she's coming home in 90 minutes and I've got to saute some onions.

 Lev Tsimring

Lev Tsimring - Self-Portrait

Lev Tsimring is a theoretical physicist trained in Russia.

For the last 18 years he has been studying nonlinear dynamics, pattern formation, and biophysics at the Universtiy of California, San Diego.

Frequent travels to conferences and collaborators all over the world provide him with opportunities and inspiration for his photography.

New Volunteer of the Month

The LJAA gallery generally has two shows a month. Ever wonder how artwork for each show miraculously appears on the walls, appealingly arranged and neatly labeled? LJAA member Mike Morse sets up every show.

 Mike Morse - The Key

This requires arranging the walls, hanging the art, printing labels, and finally, putting the labels with their appropriate pieces of art, all of which can be both tedious and tiring. (Luckily, Mike is very tall.)

Members are invited to come by the gallery and check out Mike's artwork, which is adorning the walls of the "Powder Room."

For volunteer opportunities, please contact Kris deYoung.

We need you!
Share Your Art and Gain Exposure
We are planning our fall/winter "Share Your Art" free demos, which occur on the 4th Saturday of each month starting at 10:30am. If interested in offering a free demo, please send information to Catherine MacDonald.

October 2009
President's Corner

This month's focus is on our first-ever calendar.

We need your help, since we do not have a group devoted to selling calendars. You need only sell or give as gifts 10 calendars to meet our goal of selling all by October 31. We are already half way there and just need to push a little harder.

Everyone chipping in during a fundraising campaign follows the tradition of such respected organizations as the Girl Scouts, whose members all pitch in to their fair share of cookies.

So far, many enthusiastic members have sold about half of our calendar inventory, and we still have 4 weeks to go to meet our fundraising goal by October 31. We chose this magic deadline, because many other organizations will be trying to sell or give away their 2010 calendars in the last 2 months of this year.

Think of all your friends, co-workers, and family members who would be happy to support you and your passion by buying this beautiful calendar, which reflects positively on both you and them (because they bought one!). And they cost only $11, including tax. Because we are a non-profit organization, half of the price is a tax write-off donation.

Please pick up your 10 calendars at the gallery and have fun collecting donations or buying them as holiday gifts.

If you have any questions about our Calendar Campaign, feel free to contact Gayla Edwards, Sharon Ford, or me.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Warm Regards,
Kris deYoung, President

LJAA 2010 Calendar  Update
2010 LJAA Calendar Cover
Very, very, very close to 50% of the calendars have been sold!

Thank you very much all LJAA members for your participation in buying and selling the 1st Annual 2010 LJAA Calendar. The members and public have made very positive remarks about the size of the calendar being "perfect" for small office and home spaces, the price being right with the tax included, the large number of artists displaying their images in the calendar, and learning more information about the La Jolla Art Association from members selling the calendar. The calendar has also been a great public awareness to the LJAA becoming 92 years old next year!  LJAA is the oldest art association in Southern California.

To make the selling/buying process easier, the LJAA 2010 Calendar can now be purchased online through the LJAA website. Thank you, Lev (our webmaster), for making PayPal and the calendar "live" on the LJAA website.  Members can refer anyone to purchase online, which may be a convenience for those living outside of the San Diego County area. There is an additional $4.95 USPS Priority flat rate shipping charge within the Continental U.S.  Also, the calendars can be purchased by Visa-Mastercard-Cash-Check at the LJAA gallery every day between 11am and 5pm or from any LJAA member. Members can pick up and pay for the calendars at the gallery and please remember to fill out the signout sheet in the green notebook.

The continued success of this fundraising project depends on every member selling or buying 10 calendars. The LJAA goal is to have most of the calendars sold by October 31 and all calendars sold by December 31. This date is coming fast upon us, with the holidays begin soon.

Thank you again and continued success in providing a new source of financial support for your LJAA.

Margot Wallace - Art-DecoMargot Wallace created a piece of art from an old chair to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Cancer Research Center and to help San Diego women attend the walk-a-thon in San Franciso this fall. The "Take your Seat" auction fund-raiser was held in Rancho Santa Fe on Saturday, September 12, poolside at the home of David and Martha Dominguez. Artists from all over Southern California and as far away as Belize selected old chairs and transformed them into pieces of art to be sold at a silent auction, which raised over $7000. Choosing one from a stable full of old neglected chairs gathered on the Dominquez's property in Rancho Santa Fe, Margot took home what she called "a vintage jewel from art deco daze." She hand-painted it dark chocolate with pin stripes, saying, "This is a small gem perfect for a vanity. Making over a chair is a new dimension to my usual plein air watercolor painting. I wanted to make it stand out and shout its' deco-heritage, so I accented in red tones. The petite chair now has a new, caring home--happy to have a new look from such a worthy cause!"
