This Volunteering Thing: What's It All About, Anyway?

At the All-Membership Meeting at the end of May, the LJAA approved a modified, member-friendly version of the Village Gold  (VG) volunteer service.

The new volunteer system is called the Volunteer Hours (VH) Program.

As a non-profit volunteer organization, the LJAA needs members' active participation.

In the meantime, each member's passion, talents, insights have been as equal a jewel for the LJAA as the artwork exhibiting at our new LJAA Gallery.

The volunteer Service program encourages and recognizes each of our members who are part of the whole picture.
Updated instructions of the VH Program are finally up on our website, as are the "Rules of Order" VH Program section

Please take a look and write to the Membership Director if you have any questions. Members are also encouraged to contact the Membership Director
(membership@lajollaart.org) for the information about current VH units.

All Exhibiting Members are required to perform 6 hours of volunteer service every year. Members earn 1 VH unit for every 1 hour of volunteer service.

Members who have not done volunteer services this year, do not worry. We still have 4 months to go.

And there is a quickest way to earn. . . . We need gallery staffers for the "29th Annual All San Diego County Art Exhibit" at the LJAA Gallery between September 14 and September 27, 2009.

Contact our Exhibition Director Tony Cuban (ajcuban@cox.net) to schedule your gallery sit!  Or before December 31, you can also purchase the VH you need at $10 for each VH unit.
"Solo Interactive Art" Show Stars LJAA Member

Inadvertently an artist's work becomes part of an investigation. . . . Were you there? Did you buy any art?

Watch this free Labor Day Week End art event as the story unfolds at on September 5 starting at 7pm or so.

More than spoken word and a handout, Carl Raymond Schmidt becomes CSI Carl to create this interactive performance art in the Brokers Building Gallery space.

Carl Schmidt - Evidence Window

Starting at 7pm in the third floor gallery,  CSI Carl will begin opening the evidence, interacting, performing, and installing the elements that create the piece,  "Evidence."

The event location is The Gaslamp at 402 Market Stree. Look for the window and watch for the caution tape leading to the investigation.

Your Faithful Newsletter Editor

You Have Seen Our New Look!

Now it is time to put it to your best use!

The La Jolla Art Association is now using this new email system called "Constant Contact." We have the ability to send this newsletter or announcements about your show or press releases. Constant Contact is a software program designed to help the members stay informed and to send attractive advertisements to the members, the public, and the press.

We have the email list for members, a list for other artists in the the San Diego area, a collectors list(visitors to the gallery) and the press email lists.  As we improve so will our lists and emails.

How can a member utilize this new service? If you are having a show, you send the information plus a few jpeg photos to emails@lajollaart.org.  Jeff Brosbe (brosbe@cox.net)
has volunteered to help put together your email announcements. After designing the email, he will send you a test (sample of the email). At that point, you can edit it and when you are happy with the email, Jeff will schedule it to be sent to the lists of your choice. You will have an opportunity to forward that email to your private list, too.

This is a new benefit of being a member of the La Jolla Art Assoication. Jane Cooper used it for her solo show recently. She sold two paintings at her reception.  If you have questions about the service and how to utlilize it you can email Jeff.

President's Corner

Recently, LJAA member Ingrid Wolters and I visited the Laguna Art Festival before it ended on August 30. The artwork was magnificent, funny, thoughtful, beautiful and/or inspiring. We learned a lot by enjoying and analyzing the work of artists we admired. As southern California artists, we qualify to apply for the "Art-A-Fair" venue, designed for non-Laguna Beach residents. If you are interested in this venue for next year (or the year after) visit www.art-a-fair.com and note the 2010 jurying dates on your calendar.

Or you can stay closer to home and have a no-cost way of learning more about your craft, by marking your calendar for the 4th Saturday morning of each month (except November and December) for art demonstrations, lessons, and discussions at our gallery. The last two painting demonstrations by Catherine Grawin and Chovy were huge successes.

If you have been reading recent emails, our LJAA 2010 Calendar is in the gallery and ready to pick up. The board is considering giving Volunteer Hours (VH) credit to anyone selling more than 10 calendars, so this is your opportunity to perform volunteer support to your non-profit, member operated art association plus earning VH credits.

Finally, I want to give a huge shout-out to our talented member Jeff Yeomans, who is volunteering his time and expertise to do the design of our LJAA brochure. Thank you to everyone who sent in digital images of artwork for this project.

Our next board meeting is on September 14, 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the gallery and you are all invited to attend. We are still looking for a historian, marketing director and replacements for the treasurer and newsletter editor and have some very multi-talented members who would be very capable of those responsibilities.

Warm Regards,
Kris deYoung, President

"Art in the Heart of La Jolla"

This year, 11 artists from the La Jolla Art Association donated their talents to beautify the village of La Jolla in the special "Art in the Heart of La Jolla" event. Jade Schulz of Jade J. Schulz Violins, an active member of both La Jolla Town Council and the La Jolla Art Association, organized this community effort.

Trash Can ArtTo prepare for the event, Egon Kafka, owner of La Jolla Village Lodge and member of the La Jolla Town Council, power-washed and painted the 11 trash receptacles. Jade prepared the boards for the artists and attached them to the receptacles after the artists completed the paintings.

On Saturday morning, many of the artists, like Salli Sache above, could be seen near their paintings. Next year, the plan is to add more artists and have a survey to vote for your favorite!

Thanks to our artists, Catherine MacDonald, David Ainsley, Pierce Harrah, Amy Wells, Rodger Heglar, Sharon Ford (pictured to the left), Warren Stark, Tony Cuban, Salli Sachse, Catherine Grawin (pictured below), and Monica Cadish. Look for their signatures on their paintings and email them your thanks and praises!
