PRESIDENT'S CORNERKris

Greetings LJAA members and friends,

Hopefully you all had a creative and productive summer, since it seems that school or art classes are already starting again for many people. A number of our exhibiting members enjoyed the last summer morning of July painting next to their public art display in La Jolla Village, while Jade Schultz and his hardworking team mounted the panels on a number of corners in the Village. If you want to take an "art walk" to see the many and varied contributions, maps are available at the gallery.

Congratulations to Aimee Jo, our capable and excellent Exhibitions Director, who has found a paying job teaching art at a local La Jolla elementary school. We celebrate her good fortune, plus recognize her innate ability to creatively teach art to the children of our community.

Hopefully, you got your Black & White Exhibition application mailed and took advantage of the free fee in exchange for gallery staffing. If the excitement generated last weekend at the Botanical Gardens is any indication, we will have a number of entries and an excellent juried show.

Finally, I want to thank the board and active LJAA members for contributing dishes to the delicious potluck board meeting we had at my home in August. It was fun to mix up a little socializing with business. Our next board meeting will be as usual in the LJAA gallery on Monday, September 13 at 6:30pm. Any member interested in the business of running an art organization and gallery are invited to attend.

Kind regards,
Kris deYoung

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

In August we welcomed a new artist member, Ann Neumeister. Welcome, Ann!

Thirteen LJAA members and board members the August LJAA board meeting, which was held at the LJAA President's lovely home. Thank you very much, Kris, for hosting the meeting, as well as members who attended with personal potluck dishes. Thank you, Jeff Brosbe, for the informative "Black & White Exhibition" report. And thank you, Mark Donnelly, for your attendance.

Please join our monthly board meetings if you can, especially if you are one of our new members who have not yet attended any meetings. It is a great chance to find out what is going on and what ways you can get involved with LJAA. Thank you Alison Barry and Marian Liang for your attendance at the July board meeting!

Our September board meeting will be at the LJAA Gallery on Monday, September 13 at 6:30pm. (New membership applicant's presentation starts at 6pm.)

Membership business note to ALL Exhibiting Members including active Life Members: This is another friendly reminder about the 6 volunteer hours (VHs) annual requirement, which needs to be fulfilled by December 31, unless you have received a volunteer service exemption. Some shows will be coming up this fall and winter and they need gallery sitters. Sitting at a gallery one day for 6 hours (or 2 3-hour days and so on) is a simple way to earn 6 VHs. If you are interested in gallery sitting, you may contact our new Exhibition Director, Aimee Jo (exhibitions@lajollaart.org), for the galley staffing opportunities.  If you are not sure what is involved with current gallery sitting, no worry. Please contact Doreen DiPasquale (rddp@msn.com or 858-454-5445), our Gallery Training Director, and set up a gallery orientation to refresh your memory. If you do not fulfill your 6 hours annual volunteer requirement by the end of this year, you have to pay $60 for 6 VH or $10 for each 1 VH you owe, as a donation to the LJAA.

Is anybody interested in trying a Membership Director position starting next June? If you are curious, please contact me! According to the LJAA Rules and Bylaws, I must leave this position after 3 years. We have plenty of time to train someone who is interested and I will support the new Membership Director after next June. Basic tasks are processing new membership applicants, updating member rosters, and keeping volunteer hours record online.

Best regards,
Fujiko Isomura

Images Valois

John Valois
is one of the 14 artists selected to take part in "Cross-Pollination," a comprehensive survey of current two-dimensional art using digital media. The exhibit, sponsored by the Digital Art Guild and the San Diego Art Institute, features members of the Digital Art Guild from as far away as Vancouver, British Columbia. Curator Will Gibson explains, "The idea was to find and show a specific body of work by these contemporary artists in such a way as to create an overall picture of the state of digital two dimensional art today. The digital revolution has come to most fields of our society and the art world is no exception. Many of these artists have strong backgrounds in traditional media and have chosen to explore these new tools. 'Cross-pollination' refers not only to the mix of traditional experience and digital tools, but also to the communication among artists in the Digital Art Guild. The range of how they approach their work gives the visitor an experience of what is possible and hopefully a glimpse of how things will continue to change in the future."

The exhibit is being held at the New Americans Museum Gallery at Liberty Station. An artists' reception takes place on Friday, September 3 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. in conjunction with the monthly art evening throughout Liberty Station. There will also be catalog book release and wrap party on Sunday, September 19 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the gallery. Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

healthyHEALTHY, WEALTHY, AND WISE ARTWALK & COMMUNITY FAIR

Wednesday, September 22, from 1:30am to 6:30pm
Presented by "ART in the HEART of Rancho Bernardo"

"Art in the Heart of Rancho Bernardo" is a community outreach program created last year by three financial advisors in the Rancho Bernardo office of UBS Financial Services Inc. Virginia Kuwahara, Sharon Ford, and Juleane Spittler. They found that this program offered a unique opportunity for local artists and the community. So successful was the first event that eight more artist receptions were planned.

Each month a new group of local artists has been featured. The grand finale for the 2010 "Art in the Heart of Rancho Bernardo" will be  "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Artwalk and Community Fair" on Wednesday, September 22, from 1:30am to6:30pm at the Excel Building (17140 Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego CA 92128).

The artwalk and community fair will be presented outside and around the Excel Building, near the Rancho Bernardo Library (17140 Bernardo Center Drive). Sharon invited talented local artists to participate in the artwalk. Virginia extended invitations to nonprofit organizations and businesses to become part of the community fair. The following interview explains the thought processes that went into the organization of this event.

Some of the participating artists from LJAA include Aimee Jo, Pierce Harrah, Monica Cadish, and Geroge Galaich.

---Interview with Sharon Ford and Virginia Kuwahara, co-organizers---

Q: What is this event about and what do you hope to accomplish?
Virginia: We are featuring local artists while making known the services and programs available to the community.  We want individuals in the community to become aware of how they can help themselves by learning about these programs. It creates a symbiotic relationship between the individual and the community at large.

Q: The combination of an artwalk and community fair sounds intriguing. Why an artwalk?
Sharon: "The Art in the Heart of Rancho Bernardo" program prompted the idea for the artwalk. It is a noncommercial program benefiting the community and supporting the arts and a way for us to "give back" to the community. The financial crisis and the recession have had a major effect on many of us. Due to my involvement with local art groups and Virginia's passion for community service groups, it was a natural combination as a community outreach program.

Q: How does the community fair fit in?
Virginia: By inviting a diversity of organizations (both nonprofit and commercial) to participate in this event, the entire community benefits. Community members have the opportunity to learn about the services and programs available to them. For instance, we are asking health organizations to share preventative measures to avoid illnesses and local libraries to show what programs they have available. Everyone's heard the phrase "knowledge is power" -information opens doors to possibilities. There will also be service organizations that do a host of community projects, such as painting schools, helping wounded veterans, or raising money for scholarships.

Q: So where is the symbiosis you talked about in the beginning?
Virginia: The participating organizations will explain how individuals can give back to their community through volunteering. Some people can donate money to charitable and community organizations and others can donate time, which is just as valuable. (People who have been laid off during these tough economic times could benefit by volunteering. They maintain their social and networking skills!)

Q: How successful do you think this event will be in achieving your objectives?
Sharon:  This is our first experience with organizing an artwalk and community fair. We have idealistic goals but our primary objective, as Virginia said, is to provide a service to the community. Judging from the responses we have received from the artists and the organizations we have talked to so far, it is already a success.
Virginia: Yes! Success will be measured by the participants and the community's response. Sharon and I are enjoying the process of organizing this "Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise ArtWalk and Community Fair". To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, when you drop a pebble in the water, the result is enlarging, concentric ripples. It creates an effect experienced on many levels. We're dropping our pebble.

---end of interview---

In summary, it is all about gaining awareness of services available in the community to help us all become "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise" with and the added enjoyment experiencing artwork by talented local artists. If you would like more information about this event or if you would like to participate in this community outreach program contact, Virginia Kuwahara or Sharon Ford (858-521-7000). It is free to the public, to the venders, and to the artists. And artwork will be for sale by the individual artists.
