VOLUNTEER HOURS Program
La Jolla Art Association Volunteer Service Program
In May, 2009, the name of the Village Gold Program (VG) was changed to Volunteer Hours Program (VH).
What is the LJAA Volunteer Hours Program?
- It is designed to encourage member participation and make it easier for members to receive recognition for their volunteer service to LJAA.
- It keeps the organization functional and viable.
- The records of volunteer hours help in applying for grants and funds.
- It helps to prevent board members from getting burned out and overloaded with work. (Members do not receive financial compensation for their work for LJAA.)
- All Exhibiting Members are required to do 6 hours of service per year (between January 1 and December 31)
How it Works
- On the New Membership Application and the Membership Renewal forms, each member must select at least 2 volunteer service committees/groups choices to have balanced committees/groups.
- The names are entered under their service choices on the website database.
- When a board member needs assistance, members are contacted per their choices. Members are also encouraged to contact board members as well as participate in the monthly board meeting.
- The "Volunteer Help Needed" page on the website indicates what help is needed by the Association.
- Members keep track of their own volunteer hours and report it to the board members who requested the volunteer help.
- This information is passed on to the Membership Director who maintains the VH status.
- New Members receive 6 VH as a jump start. (Existing members also received a one-time 6 VH in 2009)
Things Members Need to Know
- VH is only earned for services that help LJAA as a whole.
- In general, working to benefit your own show does not count for VH. However, more than a fair amount of gallery staffing and other exceptional contributions to one's group show could earn VH.
- Members are encouraged to check for their VH Status by logging in to on the member only area of the website. (If members lost the log in information, contact the Membership Director or Webmaster.).
Basic VH: 1 VH per hour
- Serving on the Board.
- Serving on Committee.
- Staffing the Gallery for other members as a substitute.
- Exhibition Installation (typically other than your own).
- Group leader for a show: 12 VH per show (depending on the size).
- Special Skills, like computer, phone calling, making labels, etc.
- Participating in the monthly board meeting.
- Participating in the all member meeting.
- Becoming a "Share Your Art" artist.
And so on...
Redeeming VH
VH can be redeemed in a variety of ways including:
- Participating in two week solo group shows at the LJAA Gallery (6 VH)
- Participating in a special show sponsored by LJAA (like all member show) (1-5 VH)
- The Web Gallery/Web Upgrade (10 VH per upgrade)
- Constant Contact (e-mail announcement service) announcement for outside LJAA sponsored shows, events, classes, which are directly related to the field of art. (10 VH per announcement or $10)
- A chance to be given a "Volunteer of the Month" award.
- Get a substitute Gallery Staffer for your shift and transfer VH per hour to the substitute staffer.
More to come...
Other Rules of Regulations
- When a member earns more VH than needed in one year they carry over to the next year. However, a member is required to volunteer for 6 hours of service per year despite VH status.
- The required VH may be waived by written request to the board or purchased by $10 per VH (maximum of 12 VH per year.)
- Failure to fulfill the required VH per year will lead to ineligibility to exhibit in the LJAA Gallery and member show elsewhere until appropriate VH are earned.
- VH cannot be gifted to other members.
