The process is very important to me, as are the materials I use. Design elements, a cloisonne approach, metal components, and different types of paper create paintings rich in texture, color, and depth. Nature is a great influence and is always reflected somewhere within my paintings. The spiritual aspect of my life is also a significant influence and a source of calm and balance. I create from an intuitive level; this allows my creativity to be natural and spontaneous, free, and more receptive to the universal energies. I prefer to create in this manner, to become "one with the universe," which relates to my spiritual beliefs.
Texture and color are very significant and influence the direction in which an image will evolve. Light is always an important part of my work. It becomes another element in the composition, a kinetic aspect, resulting in visual shifts to the surface. I feel that I have come to a very interesting direction in my painting, which incorporates some aspects of cloisonné work, stained glass, and the contrast of the metal components, which I find exciting, powerful, and very important to the overall visual experience. I am perpetually driven to move light in and out of a flat surface, giving the viewer a visual sense that a warm light within the painting is glowing like the sun through colored glass.
Black is also significant, and I'm thrilled with the contrast between the vivid colors and the stillness of black, which increases the drama. I use black in most of my work as the structure on which everything else is constructed, and it also lends itself well to linear expression.
