About the Artist

Raye Anne Marks is a bright talent who has developed a Bravura style of painting in oils in bold and luminous colors. Each brushful of paint is laid on as pure and clean as if it were a mosaic, yielding award-winning paintings. Her work is characterized by bold, simple patterns of lights and darks, and paint applied with directness.

Arriving in San Diego 15 years ago from Indiana, where she studied briefly on a scholarship to John Herron School of Art, she has been somewhat of an apprentice to Spanish Master Sebastian Capella and currently serves as his assistant. Capella attended the same School of Fine Arts from which Velazquez and many other Spanish artists emerged. Raye Anne has received a wealth of information from his classical training and 30 plus years of experience painting.

Artist Statement: I prefer to paint spontaneously so I solve many problems before I even touch my brush to the canvas. The checklist may be something like this: How much contrast do I want? What key of chroma? Best composition... If I am not certain, I do one or two small color sketches. When I know where I am going, I paint with confidence and lay on even the most casual brushstrokes with a strong bravura.
